Liberal Democrats United Against Mass Waste Incineration

Liberal Democrats across the County came to their annual conference united in their opposition against a proposed massive incinerator at Javelin Park on Saturday.

Liberal Democrat Councillors from both the County and all six Districts including Quedgeley Parish Councillor Anna Mozol (Severnvale Ward) whose residents live downwind of the proposed incinerator took part in the discussions.

There was collective concern about Gloucestershire County Council's proposals for 'Energy from Waste' (Incineration) of Residual Waste including the secretive nature of the bidding process and the complete failure in thinking about other technological alternatives.

Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Jeremy Hilton said that mass incineration is "bad for the environment, bad for the economy and bad for Gloucestershire."

Liberal Democrat Councillor and environment spokesman Bill Crowther said "There has been too much done behind closed doors on this issue. There are viable alternatives such as Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) which we feel have not been properly considered and scrutinised. These other processes need to be openly and fully evaluated in terms of their economic, health, and environmental impact - that is to say in public."

Following a resolution passed on 10^th October 2011 by Cheltenham Borough Council. The Liberal Democrat Group on Gloucestershire County Council at the next full council on 30^th November will call for a pause to the project until comparisons between different technologies have been made in public.
